SIW primarily operates throughout Southern Vancouver Island, we sometimes will run trips to other areas of Vancouver Island and mainland BC. SIW acknowledges that club activities take place within the traditional territories of several Coast Salish peoples.
Do I need any experience?
No you do not. SIW offers courses and trips aimed at all levels of paddling ranging from flat water paddling, to introduction to whitewater courses, to intermediate and advanced trips.
Do I need to have my own gear?
No you do not. SIW can help facilitate gear for use on courses and trips. Our instructors are happy to act as your personal gear purchase consultants, gratis. If you’re considering purchasing gear prior to the course, please consider contacting us first as we may be able to give insight on what gear is good, and more importantly – what isn’t!
What prep work do I need to do before and gear to bring on trips?
Detailed information will be provided to participants ahead of each trip.
Participants should bring sufficient food/water and snacks for the length of session. Participants should eat a hearty breakfast before all-day sessions as there is often limited opportunity for lunch on the river.
It is wise to prepare for all weather eventualities, both on and off the river. Participants may need to spend time outside loading and preparing before getting on the water. This may mean good footwear, warm clothing, rain jackets or sunscreen. Many people have been soaked from a rain squall when loading boats.
Finally, participants should bring an additional set of layering to wear underneath paddle-wear, which should include synthetic or wool top and bottoms as well as socks. Cotton clothing is forbidden as it provide negative insulation value when wet.
What is the whitewater season?
The club operates year-round. The primary whitewater paddling season on Vancouver Island is typically October til June. In the summer season, there is some limited whitewater paddling opportunity on the Cowichan river, which is dam controlled, as well as flat-water training and trips to mainland BC.
Do you do any other types of paddling, aside from whitewater?
Generally, no. Our primary focus as a club is on Whitewater river paddling. We do incorporate flat-water paddling as part of our training. If you’re interested other disciplines such as sea kayaking, dragon boating or polo, we are happy to recommend other paddling clubs which cater to these activities.
What type of boats do you paddle?
Our primary focus is Whitewater canoes and kayaks, but we plan to offer courses and trips which may include raft, stand-up paddle board, and packraft. We have a range of whitewater kayaks and canoes available for use on courses.
What ages can participate?
Participants must be 18 years old to participate as independent club members. Individuals under 18 can participate with direct parental or guardian supervision and instructor approval. That means, guardians on the river.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes, participants must be able to swim 50 m unaided.
Are there pool sessions available?
We have previously ran sessions at McKinnon Pool at the University of Victoria. We are hoping to re-offer these sessions in fall 2022.
Do I have to be vaccinated against COVID-19?
It is recommended all participants have completed their vaccine schedule.
Participants should bring a mask, and wear it during the shuttle if one of the other participants requests it.
Participants should follow Provincial health guidelines, and not attend if feeling unwell.
