Introduction to Solo Whitewater Canoeing

Overview

This two‐day course is designed as an introduction to whitewater solo canoeing. It introduces paddlers to basic strokes, maneuvers, river hydrology and river safety, in a safe and supportive environment. The first day begins by reviewing strokes, maneuvers, and boat control on flat‐water. We then progress to easy Class 1+ rapids. On day two we refine our skills on class 1 - 2 rapids.

  • Prerequisites: basic flat water canoeing certification or equivalent skills and experience. Must be able to swim 50 m. Please reach out if you have questions about the course physical requirements.
  • Questions: please feel free to send us an email at courses@siwhitewater.club.
  • Note: we require additional waivers beyond the SIW waiver, for the sponsoring association (typically the Recreational Canoeing Association of British Columbia).

Location

Various sections of the Cowichan River.

Pricing

  • $115: Instruction fee.
  • $20: Gear rental consisting of canoe, paddle, helmet, and PFD. If you wish to provide your own personal equipment, please consult with instructors to ensure it is suitable.
  • $40: Drysuit rental (fitted with latex gaskets at the neck and wrists) and bootie rental. Drysuits are required from October through April; wetsuits are acceptable May through September. We have this policy because we want you to be warm and comfortable in the water as we find this improves retention greatly. Swimming and in-water rescue techniques are part of the program!
  • $30: Annual membership to the South Island Whitewater Club if you are not already a member. $25 for students.

Therefore the maximum total cost is $205. All costs payable via Interac e‐transfer to payments@siwhitewater.club (some banks have issues sending to this domain, if so, you can send to southislandwhitewater@gmail.com).

Personal Gear

Participants must arrive with the following:

  • Warm layering for under river‐wear (tops, bottoms, and socks), made from wool, fleece, or synthetic (no cotton). 1‐3 layers may be appropriate depending on weather conditions and how hot you run. AVOID thick layers on the legs.
  • Warm clothing, including waterproofs and outdoor footwear, for when not on the water.
  • Towel.
  • Lunch, snacks, and drinks. Have a good breakfast before you arrive. Please bring a packed lunch, including waterproof snacks, to bring on the river.
  • Sun glasses and sun-screen, as conditions permit. (Use sunscreen sparingly – avoid getting sunscreen on drysuit gaskets!).

Pre-trip Homework

  • If available, it is highly recommended to attend one or more pool sessions to familiarize yourself with whitewater equipment

Meeting time / place:

  • We aim to meet between 9:00-10:00 am. As river levels vary, the location will be 'TBA' – we’ll let you know! The goal will be to be off the water by 4:00 pm.
  • Final meeting time, location and course info will be sent in the course confirmation email. This will be sent a few days prior to the course.
